We meet each Saturday morning to focus on gardening and maintenance tasks, this is to retain the quality of the horticulture and infrastructure of the park. We start at 10:00 a.m. in the yard depot to agree on what tasks we will undertake which are often determined by what is seasonally relevant. We have some experienced gardeners and those who learnt whilst working week by week. We have planted bulbs, and shrubs, regularly pulled up weeds and cut back ivy and bramble from hedgerows.
It is only for an hour as it allows people to attend other activities on a Saturday. There are typically refreshments with tea and coffee afterwards, this time gives the opportunity for conversation and to get to know your fellow workers better.
Ideally, you should bring gardening gloves, we have spare that can be used and wear clothes suitable for the outdoors. If you have your own secateurs or hand fork they are always useful for pruning and weeding as these are two consistent tasks whilst working in Hillside Gardens. As a Friends group we do liaise with Lambeth Landscapes through the park partnership board quarterly and other regular dialogue with the parks development officer.
If you would like to get involved then simply come along on Saturday or join the Friends of Hillside Gardens WhatsApp group to hear what is happening in the park week by week.
